Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters, The Great Divorce, The Problem of Pain, Miracles, A Grief Observed, plus The Abolition of Man.
Mere Christianity is the first book most people would suggest for those wanting to learn the importance of Christianity. Lewis answers why faith in Christ is unique to all other religions.
It did my Masters degree on this subject and it is a profound and beautiful teaching from our Holy Father John Paul the great. I would not try reading JPII's book The Theology of the Body without first reading this book.
I have listen to Janet Smith and she is one of the best at explaining to women why contraception hurts women, families and our culture. I had Dr. John Crosby as a professor and his essay is excellent. Once you have the facts you will not be afraid to defend the Church's teaching on this subject. In fact you will shout it from the roof tops.
Many tough guys have told me they cried when reading this biography of John Paul II. The pope asked George to write the book and it took him 10 years to finish it. He had access to everyone in Rome and Poland and lived at the North American College. It's 1040 pages long but worth the effort.
If you don't have a few spare weeks to read this book the DVD is very good. Amazon does not have it but you can click on The Ignatius Press Logo at the botton of the page to get the movie.
I flew back from Rome with George and we had a beer together in the airport in London right after the DVD came out. Interesting note: The video was the best fundraiser PBS has ever had.
Kreeft is one of my favorite authors and has much wisdom and common sense in his writing which is not so common today. I lost my sister when she was 25 years old and my dad only a few months later. I wish someone gave me this book years ago.
This unknown Franciscan priest lived in New York and Detriot. He worked many miracles in his life and still does today. I studied in Rome with a seminarian who had six months to live with stomach cancer and was cured through Fr. Solanus' intercession. I enjoined this book and it deepened my devotion to this servant of God.
This gives the best answers to the errors found in the Da Vinci Code. Very straight forward and interesting to read. You can learn a lot about history, art and your faith.
After giving your self to Jesus thru Mary we now take the 2 great spiritual masters as our guide. John of the Cross and Theresa of Avila. Fr Dubay is an expert on both and like a great coach makes us realize we can attain union with God in this life.
"Behold thy Mother!" Jesus himself tells us to take Mary as our mother. This 33 day Consecration to Mary is probably the single best thing you can do to grow in the spiritual life. But don't take my word on it..many Popes have said the same thing including JPII. I did this consecration with three of my friends and it was very powerful. Interesting note: Of those three friends two are now priests and the third is the Managing Editor for Catholic World Report.
The book below explains why this consecration is so important:
Well done and funny. If you got the catechism but never opened it you'll read this! I gave this book to one of my best friends just because of the title. I read it myself and enjoined it. Great book to leave on the coffee table for a discussion. You might win a few converts.
This is one of my favorite books. Fr. Dubay is always excellent but this is one of his best works. Any science geek will love this book. Dubay gives many examples of how Faith and Science are coming closer together as the Macro and Micro Universe are being discovered.
